# How SMS verification works

A code travels through four or five systems before it reaches you. Knowing them explains every failure you will ever see.

## How does SMS verification work?

The app generates a short random code, stores a hash of it with an expiry, and hands the number and the message to an SMS gateway. The gateway routes it to the carrier that owns the number, which delivers it to the SIM. You type the code back; the app compares it to the stored hash. A temporary number simply replaces the SIM in your phone with one in a provider's rack, with the SMS shown in a dashboard.

## The chain

- App backend: generates the OTP, sets a 2 to 10 minute expiry, runs the carrier lookup.
- SMS gateway (aggregator): picks the route to the destination carrier.
- Carrier: delivers to the SIM, sometimes filters application traffic.
- Device or dashboard: shows the text.

## Where it fails

- Before sending: the lookup says VoIP or over-used; the app refuses.
- In routing: the aggregator has no good route to that range; silent drop.
- At the carrier: spam filters eat application SMS on some networks.
- At the end: the code expires before you type it.

## Failure points and who fixes them

| Stage | What can fail | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| App backend | Carrier lookup refuses VoIP | Physical-SIM number |
| SMS gateway | No route to that range | Another country |
| Carrier | Spam filter eats application SMS | Another operator or country |
| You | Code expired or typed late | Request again, type immediately |

## FAQ

**Why do codes expire so fast?** To limit the window for interception. Most apps use 5 minutes.

**Why do some apps send codes from short numbers?** Short codes are registered high-volume senders. Some virtual ranges cannot receive them.

**Why is the same app cheaper in some countries?** Supply: countries with large prepaid markets have more numbers and lower prices.

**Why does the code arrive on the second try?** The first attempt was dropped in routing; a retry after two minutes often goes through a different route.
